Richmond Fire-Rescue along with WASP Manufacturing have teamed up to create a Structure Protection Unit Trailer (SPU) which will provide Wildfire Protection within Richmond and meet the Office of the Fire Commissioners (OFC) deployment needs for Wildfires throughout British Columbia during the wildfire season.
“With the Shell Road fire and the larger fire on the Ministry of Defence lands this past summer, the equipment in the SPU will meet the future needs of Richmond to contain and extinguish wildfire threats,” says Deputy Fire Chief Kevin Gray. “The SPU trailer is designed to help protect the city against its unique wildfire threat and can be deployed with Richmond Fire-Rescue staff throughout the Province during wildfire seasons.”
The SPU Type II trailer can provide wildfire protection for up to 30 homes, carrying over 16,000 feet of fire hose, 130 sprinklers, multiple pumps, water tanks and supporting firefighting equipment. It addresses the needs of equipment portability allowing it to be deployed in areas where access is difficult for traditional fire service vehicles.
The trailer is designed to protect against wildfire in the urban interface. They are deployed during an interface fire to dampen roofs and areas around structures, and to help prevent sparks and embers from igniting structural fires. Over the years the Office of the Fire Commissioners has been deploying trailers throughout the province in conjunction with B.C. Wildfire Services and local fire departments.
